Do what you love and get paid for it! It’s the ultimate career dream of most people. The good thing is that it’s possible! You can be an awesome entrepreneur or a rock-star employee who gets paid for what you love to do. The first step towards this is to uncover your passion.
I’m sure most of us have never made a serious attempt to uncover our passion. The five steps given below could give you a pretty good start in this direction.
Step 1: Write Down 10 Things That You Love and You Feel Are Good At
Take a pen and a paper and start thinking. Trust your intuition and write down the ideas which come first to your mind. If you think longer, you’ll start using your brain rather than your heart which would spoil the whole purpose of this exercise. If it’s getting difficult, try asking yourself the questions below. It could help you to think.
a. What would you do when you get free time?
b. What are your favorite books?
c. What’s your educational qualification and experience?
d. If money is not an issue, what job you’ll be doing?
e. What are your hobbies?
f. In what circumstances you get appreciated by friends, colleagues or family members?
g. If you can become anybody in the world, who you will be?
h. What you’ll attempt if the chance of success is 100%?
i. When do you feel more confident than usual?
j. What activities you do when you are in front of computer?
Never write down stuff which you don’t like even if you ‘feel’ you’ll be good at it. In long term, you can’t excel in something which you don’t like.
Step 2: Ask Others to Make a Similar List about You
Your friends, colleagues, mentors or family members, very often, could assess you better than yourself. Ask all your well wishers to create a similar list as mentioned in Step 1. You can even allow them to submit it anonymously, so that they could be brutally honest with you. Make sure that they don’t have a copy of the list which you have made.
You can email your friends or even post it in Facebook so that you receive maximum response. The more response you get, the better assessment you can make.
Step 3: Analyze Overlaps
Compare your friends’ lists with the one you made and look for all the overlaps. Those are the areas which everyone agrees that you are good at. You will get good results if you have got responses from at least a dozen people.
Step 4: Analyze the Scope for Monetization
You’ll have your dream career when your joy meets the world’s need. Hence it’s very necessary to make sure that there is a market for whatever you are good at. After all, passion can only satisfy your heart, not your stomach.
Step 5: Decide and Take Action
Chose the niche and start working. If you’ve more than one idea it’s very good. You will have a Plan B if the first one fails. Just start working immediately on one idea. As the famous quotation goes ‘Dream with no plan is just a wish’. Any decision is complete only when you take the action.
Living your passion is always the best idea because the alternative is not doing it and that’s definitely not a good idea. Why settle for good enough when you’ve actually got the potential to be the best in what you love?
